Biosafety and Select Agent Programs

Staff members who work with infectious materials, such as recombinant DNA materials and biological agents, are at risk for infections from the handling and management of not only these agents but also experimental animals. In addition to ensuring compliance with the guidelines for biosafety from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), EH&E can support your biosafety program with the following services:

  • Serve as a professional resource regarding biosafety issues, including biosafety requirements for new projects.
  • Participate in the activities of the Institutional Biosafety Committee.
  • Conduct annual biosafety inspections in the laboratories.
  • Prepare and update a biosafety manual, as needed.
  • Serve as a liaison with the local board of health.
  • Ensure compliance with 42 CFR Parts 72 and 73 regarding possession, use and transfer of select agents and toxins.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local regulations regarding bioterrorism and biosecurity, such as the 2001 USA Patriot Act and the 2001 Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Response Act.
