This is the second webinar in the "Advanced Biosafety Webinar Series - Meeting the Challenges of Today's Research".

Webinar Description
Genome-based research is already enabling medical researchers to develop more effective diagnostic tools, to better understand the health needs of people based on their individual genetic make-ups, and to design new treatments for disease.  Genomics has the potential of offering new therapeutic methods for the treatment of some diseases, as well as potential applications in the food and agriculture sectors. This webinar will provide biosafety professionals with a very current view of genomic research techniques and unique challenges relating to potential exposure to both chemicals and synthetic DNA.

This online event will cover:

  • Overview of genomics, including the changing landscape of reading and writing DNA.
  • Overview of the Personal Genome Project and related regulatory issues.
  • The manipulation and creation of DNA sequences for the creation of biological agents (i.e., synthetic DNA).
  • Biological safety and regulatory issues related to genomics/synthetic DNA.

About the Speakers

Alexander (Sasha) Wait Zaranek, PhD
Research Fellow in Genetics, Harvard Medical School
Director Informatics / Co-Founder, Personal Genome Project
Scientific Advisor / Co-Founder, Clinical Future, Inc.

Sasha is a Research Fellow in Genetics in the George Church Laboratory at Harvard Medical School.  Sasha co-founded the Personal Genome Project (Boston, MA) and led diverse efforts to enable scientists, clinicians and the general public to query vast genomic data sets using free and open source software tools. He also co-founded Clinical Future, Inc. (Boston, MA) where he provided core ideas to commercialize technologies co-developed with the Personal Genome Project (PGP) focusing on personal genomic medicine and encouraging preservation of open nature PGP tools for ongoing community oriented, co-development. Sasha earned a doctorate of Philosophy in Biophysics from Harvard University and a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto.
