Legionellosis is an infection in humans caused by inhalation of the bacterial species Legionella. These bacteria can cause two types of infections: Legionnaires’ disease and Pontiac fever. In buildings, air-conditioning equipment (cooling towers and evaporative condensers) are the most common sources of Legionella bacteria; however, these bacteria have also been found in potable water sources (hot water heaters, shower heads, faucets, whirlpools, humidifiers).
