ASHRAE 110 Fume Hood and BioSafety Cabinet Testing

ASHRAE 110 Fume Hood Testing
EH&E performs initial and periodic tests of installed fume hoods as part of the laboratory ventilation management program (in accordance of ANSI/AIHA Z9.5-2003 American National Standard for Laboratory Ventilation).

The performance of the laboratory fume hood under “AU” (as used) conditions when initially installed should include the ASHRAE 110-1995 performance test. The ASHRAE 110 test consists of four parts:

  • Small volume smoke test
  • Large volume smoke test
  • Face velocity tests
  • Tracer gas containment tests

Periodic performance tests of the face velocity measurements/grid tests and smoke visualization test are required at least on an annual basis and when repairs of a fume hood occur.

EH&E can perform the ASHRAE 110 testing and provide certification documentation for each fume hood tested.

Biosafety Cabinet Testing
EH&E can provide the necessary equipment, documentation and engineering support to perform the biosafety cabinet (BSC) testing and field verification program. The BSC management program includes:

  • Test, certify and tag BSC in accordance with the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 49-2002 for the field certification of biological safety cabinets, Class II. Certification is conducted by NSF-accredited service technicians.
  • Field certification primary physical tests (NSF Std.) include:
    • Velocity profile test
    • Work access opening airflow (face velocity)
    • HEPA filter leak test
    • Airflow smoke patterns
    • Electrical test
  • Certification documentation for each cabinet tested.
  • Assistance with training on the proper use of BSCs.
  • Provide assistance with troubleshooting problems with BSC equipment and contamination.
  • Monitoring proper decontamination, testing, and recertification of BSCs that have been repaired or moved to a new location.
