Radiation

The safe handling and use of radioisotopes and radiation-producing devices is an integral part of a laboratory’s safety program. In addition to ensuring compliance with the guidelines for radiation safety from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the state agency empowered to enforce NRC regulations, EH&E can support your Radiation Safety Committee and Radiation Safety Program with the following services:

  • Conduct radiation inspections in the laboratories to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Prepare and update the Radiation Safety Manual and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as needed.
  • Assist with review and preparation of radiation safety permits and amendments for your institution.
  • Develop radiation protection programs including personnel monitoring, dosimetry, and best practices to maintain radiation exposures at or below ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable) levels.
  • Radiation safety training for novice and experienced radioisotope users.
  • Manage the decontamination of radioactive and / or chemically-contaminated laboratories.
  • Develop and implement Laboratory Decommissioning plans.
  • Liaison with state and federal regulatory agencies in all aspects of compliance.
  • Perform radiation dose modeling using EPA-approved methodologies.
